ANGRY ELEPHANTJoel's Rant

We ignore this

 reality at our

peril.

Did you know that as late as 1938 France and Great Britain were far more powerful than Germany?  At the time of the Munich disaster of "peace in our time" fame, either France or Great Britain alone could have kicked Germany's butt had hostilities been declared.  Both of those countries had larger armies, formidable air forces, more tanks and heavy weapons and more experienced commanders with battlefield experience.

Unfortunately, both France and Great Britain did nothing to stop Germany, and by September 1, 1939 the balance of power had shifted, and the rest is history.  Very bad history, made all the worse by the fact that it all could have been prevented had those with power stood up earlier to their eventual adversary, who while talking trash and acting ultra-tough, was actually rather weak in comparison.

I love history.  You can learn so much, and even better, if you missed it on the first go-round you can catch it again later because it actually does repeat itself.  Just take a look at what's happening with Iran today.  What are you willing to bet we'll act in our own best interests while our eventual adversary is weak?  Hmmmmmmm, is that a bet you want to take?

In just the past two weeks Iran has taken the following steps:

·         Launched a rocket carrying a small satellite into space. (Clearly their rocket is not yet capable of launching a nuclear weapon, but continuing to develop this working technology is their plan, no?),

·         Completed an agreement with Russia for the delivery and installation of an advanced air defense system. (Yes, backstabbing our allies in Poland and the Czech Republic really got Russia to cooperate with us big-time.),

·         Declared they have succeeded in enriching uranium to 19.75% purity, making the creation a nuclear bomb a foregone conclusion.  (Only the willfully blind, logarithmically stupid or leader of the free world could continue to hope this enrichment is for peaceful purposes.)

What has Barack Obama been doing in the meantime to mitigate these provocative acts?  Nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  Oh yes, he did make a statement that tough sanctions will be necessary and blah, blah, blah......   Oh, and he did say he was happy to see Russia blah, blah, blah.......

This is nothing.  We're France and Great Britain, looking on while knowing that a military confrontation is going to happen, but still taking no action.

But why should we care if Iran becomes a nuclear nation?  The Soviet Union was a nuclear nation and we lived with them, right?  So what's the big deal?

The big deal is that it's possible that Iran will not be contained the way the Soviet's were.  The Soviet's wanted to protect their populations.  The Soviet leaders liked the good life themselves and planned to live long and comfortable lives.

Conversely, the Iranians are obsessed with death.  Their leaders have even made statements to the effect that death is what life's all about.  They glory in death.  They recruit suicide bombers.  They advocate strapping bombs to children and sending them into crowded pizza restaurants, for crying out loud.  Here's a glimpse of what could happen:

Remember when Saddam marched into Kuwait, thereby taking control of their oil fields and threatening the energy supplies of the free world?  Would we have taken those fields back and destroyed Saddam's military if he'd had nuclear weapons?  What will the world be like if Iran has that nuclear prowess?  What kind of blackmail will they demand?

Other countries in the Middle East, like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan fear an Iranian hegemony.  If Iran goes nuclear, those countries will develop their own nuclear capabilities.  What kind of world will that be when every country in the Middle East is nuclear armed?  You think the Middle East is a dysfunctional tinderbox now?

Iran has at least two proxy "terrorist armies" in Hamas and Hezbollah.  What are the chances those barbarians will eventually become armed with nuclear weapons?  What about other terrorists like Al-Qaida and the Taliban?  Will they become nuclear armed?  What about outlaw countries like Venezuela and Syria and perhaps others?  Will they look to develop their own capabilities?

And what about Israel?  Iran has actually sworn to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth.  Will the rest of the world stand by while a western democracy and ally of the United States is attacked with nuclear weapons?

In other words, the calculus of risk is hyper-inflated if these people are allowed to possess the most devastating and destructive weapons of all time.  While the scenario of a preemptive military strike is extraordinarily unattractive, the alternative is much less attractive, much worse and requires us to do what needs to be done.

We ignore this reality at our peril.

And that's all there is to it.

Hosted by
 Gene Rayburn
(aka: Russell Wooldridge)

Match Game (also called Match Game '7"X") is a tv game show featuring contestants attempting to match celebrities' answers to fill-in-the-blank questions.  It was hosted for most of its time on the air by Gene Rayburn.  The most famous versions of the 1970s and 1980s, starting with Match Game '73, were remembered for their bawdy (for the seventies TV) and sometimes rowdy humor and involved contestants trying to match six celebrities.  Regular celebrities included Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Brett Somers.

For Match Game HCRC, there will be a raffle drawing of attendees who will compete in one round of 6 questions.  There will be one additional question in case of a tie.  Chris Riviello will act as producer and judge.  Russell Wooldridge will host.

A CALL TO ACTION
m

In his State of the Union address, on January 27, President Obama made "jobs" his top priority, but the EPA plans to impose unreasonable new regulations on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that will hurt businesses and cost jobs.  These new mandates could begin next month!

Congress heard loud and clear that Americans do not want the "cap and trade" policies offered last year by the House and Senate.  But now that Congress won't legislate such bad policies, the EPA is threatening an end run around the legislative process by imposing new emissions restrictions on its own authority.

According to the EPA's own interpretation of the Clean Air Act, upcoming new GHG standards for cars will automatically trigger GHG regulations for other sources too - including factories, universities, hospitals, dairies, and more.

Meeting these new regulations could compel American companies to cut employees, and would funnel funds away from business growth and job creation.  These drastic and immediate GHG regulations would be unwelcome at any time, but they could be especially damaging during this time of high unemployment, and unsteady economic progress.

TAKE ACTION: Please take a few minutes to email President Obama, and copy EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson at:
to raise your concerns about EPA regulation of greenhouse gases. These regulations would immediately put thousands of businesses and jobs in jeopardy. Also, please email your U.S. Senators and urge them to sign Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski's disapproval resolution to stop the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. You can learn more, and take action, by visiting the Partnership website today.

An Intelligent Riddle

Obama meets with the Queen of England. He asks her
,
"Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give to me?"
"Well," says the Queen, "the most
important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people." Obama frowns "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?"
The Queen takes a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy. You just ask them to answer an intelligent riddle." The Queen pushes a button on her intercom. "Please send Tony Blair in here, would you?" Tony Blair walks into the room. "Yes, my Queen?"
The Queen smiles. " Answer me this, please, Tony. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?" Without pausing for a moment, Tony Blair
answers, "That would be me." "Yes! Very good," says the Queen. Obama goes back home to ask Joe Biden, his vice president, the same question. "Joe. Answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It's not your
brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?" I'm not sure," says Biden. "Let me get back to you on that one." He goes to his advisors and asks every one, but none can give him an answer. Finally, he ends up in the men's
room and recognizes Colin Powell's shoes in the next stall. Biden asks Powell, "Colin! Can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child and it's not your brother or your sister. Who is it?" Colin Powell yells back, "That'
easy. It's me!" Biden smiles, and says,"Thanks!"
Then, he goes back to speak with Obama. "Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It's Colin Powell." Obama gets up, stomps over to Biden, and
angrily yells into his face, "No, you idiot! It's Tony Blair!"

TIME TO TAKE A STAND!

EE

The Maryland General Assembly meets in Annapolis each year, for 90 days, to act on more than 2300 bills including the State's annual budget. The 427th Session began January 13, 2010 and adjourns April 12, 2010.

They say citizens are never safe while the Legislature is in session.  If you believe that our Country and State are headed in the wrong direction, and if you believe that taxes are too high, then you need to support your Delegates and Senator by testifying for their bills in Annapolis. We Republicans are outnumbered. That makes getting a bill approved very difficult and very frustrating for our representatives.  Citizen support often makes all the difference.  You can help by testifying to the appropriate Committee, when the bill is scheduled to be heard, or by submitting your testimony in writing prior to the hearing.  Just click the link below to see how:

Volunteers Night Out!
Thursday, March 4th

c

Jeff Robinson needs your help!!  Next month, on Thursday, March 4th, we're conducting a Volunteers Night Out for my campaign supporters who are looking to change the way we do government in this state.   The VNO specifics are:

The Volunteers.  With the next election less than nine months away, this campaign will give Howard County citizens the chance to change the direction that our government is headed.  Starting in just a few short weeks, I'll be needing help from many people who'll roll up their sleeves and who can help me-and other sensible candidates-get elected here in Howard County.

The political-and the economic-climate is in a critical state right now; and grassroots volunteering is going to be more important than ever this year. We're going to have plenty of volunteer opportunities that will make a difference in this upcoming election.  Even if you're a political novice, what might you be able to do?   Well, here's the short answer:

EXPERIENCE IS NOT NECESSARY....

MASSIVE COMMITMENTS OF TIME ARE NOT EXPECTED....

AND WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK!

We've provided a PDF file that lists the kinds of volunteer needs that we're hoping to get help with.  We'll briefly go over the big issues and our campaign strategy-and turn to you for advice on how to best energize the voters in our community.

Please consider coming to the Volunteers Night Out on March 4th, Total Site Solutions Conference Center at 6:30 pm to explore the possibilities.  We'll be serving some light dinner, so please come a little hungry.

So Remember:  This is your chance to get involved and make a difference.  And this is our chance, as citizens, to change the way that things are being run in Annapolis.

If you have additional questions about how to get involved or the kinds of help needed:     Call me at 443-745-0871

  Thought for the week!

If conservatives truly are to learn from Scott Brown's success, the essential point they must grasp is this:  In the politics of 2010, arrogance is a terminal condition.  Scott Brown got it right: The seat for which he ran is the peoples seat.  And the public service is actually about serving the public.
